Lifted from a post from Alex from the Fall 2014 game, lightly edited for new rules.

What to do if you kill someone and they don't die

Claim they tried to kill you and failed. Post something on the forum with many capital letters and exclamation marks. Post as fast as possible -- being the first claim is a big psychological advantage.

You need to claim a reason you didn't die.

- You were Conspiracy Theorist. This requires a plausible reason for you to have them in your list.
- You are superhero and had a paranoia list. You'd need to account for past days and the lack of investigations.
- You have a Medkit. I have it now, so you'd need to come up with a good reason
- You're Desperado. This works generically but gives you at most three days to live before it's known you're Mafia.

You might be thinking: How do I come up with a cover story on the spot? You don't. You need to plan it in advance to have it ready before the kill. This advice also holds in general. Come up with roles to claim already; make up what you were doing as a townie of that role as game goes on so as to have it ready under pressure. You might also want to have an kill-resisting role in your mental reserve as well though.

Also, you can stall. Remember, you're a townie who was just almost killed, lots of adernaline, lots of reason to be suspicious. You can say you're worried that rogue will kill you (then can still do so to people immune to Mafia). You can pretend you don't want to reveal your role. You can pretend to lie to bait out Set a Trap.

If you're out of ideas, just claim Conspiracy Theorist no matter how implausible the choice. Then, if people call you out on it, PM them or someone town trusts and say you lied to waste Mafia's Set a Trap.

(All this relies on knowing that your target didn't die. Unless it will compromise your stealthiness, take a second to ask if someone you killed is in fact dead.)

Don't give up. Any doubt that you're Mafia is a boon. Even if you're lynched, the more town is forced to reveal in lynching you, the more shovels they need to use, the better. But, if it seems hopeless, consider going kamikaze before you can be tased.

Avoiding Forum Screwage

Be very careful with your forum screen. If someone sees you in the Mafia Den, you're dead, and other Mafia might be caught too.

Bookmark the Town Square, not Mafia Den or the main page.

Before posting in the Mafia Den, check that it is in fact the Mafia. Mafia have messed this up before...

Set yourself to be invisible on the forum. It's in Board Preferences in your User Control Panel. That way, you can claim to not have seen things on the forum when it's convenient.

State of mind

One psychological tell of Mafia is that they don't fear or suspect other players the way Townies do. It's hard to keep up the feeling that anyone can be lying and you could be killed at any time.

So, make a note to act like a townie in discussions. You can evade questions by saying you don't trust the questioner. Why do they want to know this sensitive information? Why should you trust them? Are they really asking you to go into a room alone with them?

Defending yourself often just gives more attention to the accusations. If there's an accusation that's minor, unprovable, or unlikely to gain traction, ignore it and let it be lost in the depths of the forum.

In fact, just saying you have a good reason you can't share is often surprisingly effective, and at least lets you stall to come up with one.

When would we want to poison people? I can't really think of the use cases for it.

Poison is useful for removing targets that you have trouble actually encountering in real life, although using it helps town coordinate with a guaranteed innocent person.

Yeah, we got unlucky. =(

I think we're still in reasonable shape though. We have enough set-a-trap fodder to allow us to make multiple kills for a few days. We'll be doing pretty well if you successfully kill Katie tomorrow.
