She called out “My wife, my dearest, let down your long hair!” and the beautiful golden coils fell from above. She climbed, eager to finally run away with her one and only, but upon reaching the top, rather than her love’s fair face, she saw a hideous crone. The crone berated her for her sin against God, calling their love affair immoral and warning Mads she’d burn in hell for it. “But where is my lover? What have you done to her?” Mads cried. “She’s dead and rotting, you will never see her again!” she cackled. Despondent, Mads turned around and threw herself off the tower, eager to reunite with her lover in heaven. Mads has died of loneliness. |
