So, the politician is an innocent who slides the lynch onto the second place person.

Assume:
We believe the conscription already took place.
The politician was not conscripted.

Then:
The politician should publicly reveal himself. Then, we lynch him (with our desired lynch target in second place). Then, the politician collects claims after shifting the lynch.

Why?
The mafia has no incentive to FALSELY claim politician. We lynch the politician, so false poli will just die (Now, if the mafia did conscript the politician, this would still be desirable. In order to defeat the mafia we would have to exhaust both lives anyway, so having him lose one here is good.)
Therefore, only an innocent (specifically the politician) will claim to be the politician. After being lynched, we will know the poli is innocent unless conscripted. The poli will have a target on their back now, but it draws attention away from other power roles. It also should result in the poli being more careful to avoid getting killed (group escorts).

Anyway, I'd like to hear discussion on this.

JRC, you are a clever man.

My thoughts:

1. It is possible that the politician has already been murdered, right?

2. In the unlikely even that two people come out as politician - I propose we lynch the second one. By having this policy in place now, it should prevent a mafia member from claiming politician after the real one does in order to cause confusion (and in hopes we'll lynch the other one).

It is possible. If the politican doesn't come out, then I will assume the following:

POLI was killed or POLI is conscripted (or POLI disagrees with my logic and doesn't want to say it, but I claim that's off the equilibrium path).

2. Why counterclaim a politician claim? There should never be two claims on that role. We'll just lynch you. If you're lying, you die (and we know you're not the POLI). Hooray!

I'm not willing to make that assumption. We'd have to take extraordinary measures to protect the politician once he/she is revealed because he/she could still be conscripted.

Hmm... if there hasn't been a conscription yet, this could actually be a very clever ploy on JRC's part to get the politician to reveal his/her identity to the mafia.

The question then remains why was there no kill on day 3? To make us think there had been a conscription? Because there really was? Or some other reason?

It sure could be. This game is described as "[a] game of sneakiness and paranoia ".

(I'm not, for all that's worth).

Starting to wonder if the politician is dead, since nobody's come forward yet...

however, even if they are alive, doesn't it make sense for them to wait until tomorrow to come forward? Tonight, I assume people are going to lynch Fluffy, so they would have to wait until tomorrow to lynch the politician anyways - and if the politician came forward today they'd have a target on their back all day tomorrow even though their politician-ness had yet to be verified.

I didn't ask the politician to come out. I was more or less asking for someone to poke holes in "why I think the poli should come out tomorrow"
