Inception

Did something about game seem off to you? Like a weird dream that mixed mafia with werewolf and added a heavy dose of trollness? Well… it turns out it was a dream, and you’ve just woken up. Welcome to the real world!

Interactions with Dreaming Players

The official cover story for when “living” players see you is that you’re some sort of ghost of the deceased who can still affect their world. If they ask you, you’re “dead but in-game.” You can continue to read Town Square, but not post, and you may lose access to other forums you could previously read.

There are very limited ways to get in contact with the dream world. They can talk at you, but you can’t comment about game to them. Do not talk at them, make facial expressions, act differently around players whom you know to be Mafia, or probe them for information. Remember especially that you MUST NOT give away that they’re in a dream. It is of critical importance that they continue to believe that their silly dream world is reality.

You may only interact with dreaming players by listening to them talk or interact, using specified abilities to send anonymous PMs via Mods, using specified abilities to give them items, or using specified abilities to perform incants on them.

When you interact with other players who are awake, you can talk and interact normally, but you MUST be careful to make sure that there are no dreaming players nearby to overhear.

Shenanigans

In general, the rules for real-world play are the same as the rules for dream-world play: your psyche remembered most things correctly. The Mods are the same, night phase is the same, you still can’t fake incants, etc.

However, the real world doesn’t have silly arbitrary restrictions on cryptography, provable randomness, anonymity, copying text, simultaneity, or deadman switches. All of these things are now allowed!

Guaranteed Factions

Each player has one or more teams that they are working with. Everyone knows who is on their team. Nobody is a secret agent or brainwashed away from their team. However, they might have other teams that you don’t know about.

Items

The following is a complete list of items available in the real world:

Microphone broadcasting to AM channel X: This allows you to send a message to any receivers tuned to AM channel X in the dream world or the real world. It uses up one battery each time you send a message. A message may contain at most 100 characters, is anonymous (send it to Mods who will deliver it to the receiver), and will be proofread by Mods to make sure it does not include game-breaking information. Messages cannot talk about the real world, or attempt to give information about specific players within the dream world. They can only give generic information (e.g. telling someone what Point of Interest has something useful, telling them that a certain role or item exists in game and what it does, telling them that dead players are responsible for disappearances so they shouldn’t bother investigating living players, non-player-specific advice). The information does not need to be true. Ask Mods if you are unsure what counts as a valid message.

Receiver tuned to AM channel X: This allows you to receive messages sent from any microphones tuned to AM channel X in the dream world or the real world. It uses up one battery each time you receive a message.

Battery: These are useful for powering microphones and receivers. They don’t do much on their own.

Disappearances

The dream serves an important purpose, but sometimes there’s an even stronger need for certain players back in the real world. To wake someone up and remind them of their real goals, certain abilities allow real-world players to tap them on the shoulder, incant “bang,” and thus make them “disappear.”

Disappearances work very similarly to kills, except that they’re labeled as disappearances instead of deaths on Town Square. Notably, players who have gotten themselves so entrenched in the dream that they’re immune to bang will NOT disappear when you incant on them - they’ll just be very confused since they thought you were dead.

Players have predetermined real goals, no matter when or who causes them to disappear and wake up in the real world.

When you go to disappear a player, you should be careful not to get caught. There are a limited number of investigation abilities among real world and dream world players to investigate who was responsible for a disappearance. If you are caught making a disappearance using one of these abilities (the details of which are unspecified), you will be “put on trial” for tampering with the dream world. It will be posted publicly in the real world forum when a player is put on trial. That player will not be able to cause any more disappearances for the rest of game, even if they have abilities that would otherwise allow them to do so. Furthermore, on the night that they are put on trial, neither they nor anyone on a team with them will have their votes count.

Nightly Voting

Each night, the real world as a whole attempts to set a Disappearance Trap. You may vote to Protect or to Trap one dream world player, and you must submit a guess for their classical role at the same time. A Protection is a -1 vote and a Trap is a +1 vote. Only voters who guess correctly will have their vote count. Everyone’s votes (player and to protect/trap, but not role guess) will be posted publicly on The Real World forum, but it will not be stated which votes count. The dream world player who has the largest positive number of successful trap votes will have a Disappearance Trap set on them, and this will be announced publicly on The Real World forum. (The trap is set on no one if no one has a positive number of counting votes, and is resolved randomly in case of a tie.)

While a Disappearance Trap has been set on a dream world player, any real world player may bang that trapped player to cause them to disappear and wake up in the real world. The Disappearance Trap lasts one day.

There is no nightly execution vote, or any similar way to vote out players in the real world.

Kills and Revenge

Some abilities will allow real world players to kill one another (with “BANG!” only). If you die in the real world, who knows what’ll happen to you?

There are no roles that allow players to investigate each other for real world deaths. However, a dead player’s faction members may make 2 infallible investigations on their teammate’s death, and if they are successful then all members of that faction will be immune to being killed by their teammate’s killer and may kill them in revenge. (This is very similar to a team of gay knights, but the faction members don’t die of lovesickness.) Yes, this can get into nasty revenge spirals. Note: if a player who dies has more than one faction, each faction will get the 2 investigations and revenge abilities.

RULES UPDATE: Disappearance traps only last for one day. (So only the most recent night's votes allow you to disappear someone.)

RULES UPDATE: you can submit "None" as your guess for role for disappearance voting, which is correct iff the player has no role. Sorry, Mods screwed up and should've made this part of original rules.
