Is this necessary to avoid a lynch mob? (It seems like it'd make it suspicious when you don't die.)

I don't think it'll look very suspicious. Mafia could have made incorrect guesses with set a trap.

I probably will tell interested players that mafia probably wasted a set a trap on me guessing investigator.

You wouldn't know that, though---if set a trap fails, we just get the answer "no" without them hearing anything.
